DeafBlind Harvard Graduate Haben Girma Visits St. Catherine University
On Sunday, May 24th, 2016 St. Catherine University graduates were lucky to have Harvard graduate Haben Girma as their commencement speaker. Ms. Girma has made recent news as the first and only DeafBlind graduate of Harvard. She was also at President Obama’s White House to celebrate the 25th anniversary of ADA’s passing. Ms. Girma was kind enough to stick around for another day to present to the DeafBlind leaders and community members at St. Catherine University on Monday, May 25th. She stressed leadership, advocacy, and equality of education for all people, regardless of ability. Many thanks to Paula Gajewski Mickelson, department chair for the ASL & Interpreting Department, and the SCU staff for making this happen! Photo credits all belong to: Ryan Johnson and St. Catherine University.
MDBA Has A New Home!
After being in Griggs-Midway building for 17 years, we have changed where the MDBA office is. We have now moved into the Wright Building, which is still on University Ave and the light rail. SSB and Low Vision Store is across the street. The new office has been painted and is still being organized – pictures will be hung and we will be ready for VIP visitors from the HKNC Regional Office in October 2015!!”

MDBA Receives Contribution from 2015 St. Catherine University ITP Seniors
Graduating ITP Seniors from St. Catherine University’s (also known as St. Kate’s) ITP program has a tradition of contributing money to various Deaf-related organizations. This year, MDBA was honored to receive the award on behalf of MDBR (Minnesota DeafBlind Retreat). The money will be used towards a scholarship for a DeafBlind person to attend camp in summer 2015. President Debbie Lentz and Secretary Leah Bender attended the event on behalf of MDBA and received a certificate with nationally known educator and CDI at St. Catherine, Jimmy Beldon (see picture). President Lentz gave a short speech about the MDBA organization and thanked the seniors for this honor. Yay St. Kate’s Wildcats!
